What is Boreas?
By Dirk Biesinger • August 18, 2025
Boreas is the setting of the Boreas’ Tribes Saga, but it is more than just a backdrop for a story. It is a world with a deep, documented history spanning tens of thousands of years. At the time the saga begins, Boreas is in its Fifth Epoch—a period defined by intentionality, balance, and the power of the trajectory.
The Five Epochs of Borean History
-
The First Epoch: The Era of Discovery (12,213 years)
Following the initial settlement of the world by humanoids, this era saw the first discovery of dragons and magic. These forces flourished for millennia before mysteriously vanishing. By the end of this epoch, Boreas had emerged as a burgeoning space-faring civilization. -
The Second Epoch: The Technological Peak (2,375 years)
A period of rapid, concentrated advancement. Boreas became one of the most technologically sophisticated worlds in its galactic quadrant, pushing the boundaries of what was possible through engineering and science. -
The Third Epoch: The Galactic Empire (21,732 years)
Boreas expanded—at times brutally—to become the seat of the first galactic empire, governing approximately 25,000 worlds. Like all empires built on unchecked expansion, it eventually collapsed from within under the weight of its own complexity. -
The Fourth Epoch: The Dark Ages (7,843 years)
A difficult, transitional era marked by sharp population decline and the rule of violent warlords. Slowly, a consensus began to spread among the survivors: the old ways were unsustainable. Centuries were spent dismantling the relics of the technological society and establishing a new foundation for human survival. -
The Fifth Epoch: The Current Era
The setting of the Boreas’ Tribes Saga. This is a society that has consciously chosen a low-to-no technology lifestyle for daily life (though technology is utilized behind the scenes to maintain the premise). It is a world without currency, where every individuum contributes in their own chosen way. Here, race, gender, and heritage do not define a person’s potential—only their interests and their commitment to an intentional life.
The Origin of the World
The world of Boreas was not built for a book; it was engineered for a video game. My family and I have been curating this universe for nearly twenty years, collecting thousands of snippets, concepts, and details. The original hand-drawn map dates back to 2009. I am now using this vast archive—grounded in rigorous physics and planetary mechanics—to bring the stories of Boreas to life.
Future Horizons
While I am currently focused on the Fifth Epoch, the Borean archives are deep. The history of this world provides a massive canvas for exploration:
- The First Epoch: For fantasy-heavy narratives exploring the era of the original dragon riders.
- The Second & Third Epochs: For sci-fi explorations of the Empire at its height.
- The Fourth Epoch: For stories of survival within a collapsing dystopian landscape.
The trajectory of Boreas is long, and we are only just beginning to explore the possibilities within the expanse.
