Hello, I'm Dirk Biesinger

My Writing. The World of Boreas.

I write speculative fiction at the rigorous intersection of Science Fiction and Fantasy (SFF). For over twenty years, I have curated the materials, concepts, and mechanics of the world of Boreas. This isn't just world-building; it’s a multimedia architecture.

In my work, the details matter. Whether it’s the calculated planetary mechanics, the internal consistency of the calendars, or the linguistics of a fully developed writing system, everything is grounded in "first principles." While the complexity of the Boreas’ Tribes Saga has been called daunting, I invite readers to embrace it—in this world, the smallest detail often carries the weight of future history.

The Origin. Why I Write.

Boreas began not as a book, but as a blueprint for a MMORPG. The goal was to create a game that taught through experience rather than lectures. The core lesson remains the heartbeat of my writing: Nobody survives alone.

We are inextricably linked to our groups, our environment, and our world, our tribes, our family. Every excess by the few leads to scarcity for the many. In October 2023, after decades of mapping and planning, at the conjuncture of several events, I sat down to translate these materials into prose. The medium changed, but the mission stayed the same: to explore the balance required for humanity to thrive.

My Philosophy. Rigorous Hope.

My work is a deliberate rejection of the "downward spiral." In a literary landscape often dominated by grimdark cynicism and modern nihilism, I choose a different trajectory. However, "non-dystopian" does not mean "naive." I find the surface-level optimism of some movements too shallow; real hope is not a state of being, but a discipline of engineering.

This philosophy is built on three core pillars:

The Weight of the Individuum: I use the term individuum to encompass every sentient form, regardless of biology or origin. The world is the cumulative result of a billion individual decisions. Because every individuum matters, every decision carries weight. There are no "throwaway" characters or inconsequential lives in the expanse.

Anti-Grimdark, Not Conflict-Free: I believe in the constructive rather than the corrosive. My writing explores high stakes and deep challenges without surrendering to the idea that cruelty is the only "realistic" outcome. I write for those who want the richness of an epic saga but refuse to believe that darkness is the only honest way to tell a story.

The Discipline of Balance: Boreas is an exploration of equilibrium. When one individuum takes in excess, it creates scarcity for the many. This isn't a utopian accident; it is a calculated necessity for survival. My stories examine the grit and determination required to maintain that balance across generations.

Technology & Ethics.

My professional background is in Computer Science, Data Science, and AI, which gives me a unique perspective on the tools of my trade. I am often asked about my stance on Generative AI in the arts:

Human-First Creativity: I do not use AI to write my books, design my covers, or create my artwork. I believe using a person's work without intent or consent is fundamentally unethical.

Purposeful Tools: I do use technology to enhance the rigor of my world. I utilize custom scripts to manage a census of "The Guard"—tracking birthdays, "Hammer challenges," and academic progression for over two thousand individuals—and to translate text into the ancient Borean writing system, to only name two.

Professional & Personal.

Beyond the page, I am a consultant in Data Science and AI for companies such as Microsoft, Google, and T-Mobile. This "keen interest in figuring things out" defines my life and my work.

Professional Background.

My professional background is in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, AI and a keen interest in figuring things out and always learning. I am working as a consultant for companies like Microsoft, Google, T-Mobile, GAP, and ServiceNow.

Originally from Germany, I immigrated to Canada before settling in the Greater Seattle area. I live with my wife—my most trusted partner in developing the world of Boreas—along with our two poodles and three cats. Our son recently completed his Master’s degree in Japan.

Stay Connected.

I believe in only speaking when there is something worthwhile to say. Consequently, I am not a frequent "poster" on social media. If you want to follow the trajectory of my work, the best way to stay in touch is through my newsletter, my YouTube channel, or by checking back here in the "corner of the expanse."
